Risk for Diabetes in Pregnancy can be Reduced with Probiotic Says Research

Pregnant with a risk for diabetes? Worry no more: Pregnant women have a new natural weapon in the fight against gestational diabetes.

Fonterra Programme Manager Nutrition and Health, Dr. James Dekker said instances of gestational diabetes are on the rise throughout the world so it’s exciting to find out Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001, referred to as SureStartTM LactoB 001, may be able to change this.

NZFarmer reports:

Dairy giant Fonterra has developed a naturally occurring probiotic, and research led by the University of Otago, Wellington has shown it has resulted in a 68 percent reduction in gestational diabetes in a trial group of 194 women. Fonterra programme manager nutrition and health, Dr James Dekker, said the probiotic had been trademarked and was already being used in health supplements by Du Pont, who paid a royalty for its use.

“We are looking at where we might use it in other products, especially food. In the past we have used a strain in 150 gram pottles of yoghurt,” said Dekker to NZFarmer.

Eating Fresh Fruits Daily may Lower Diabetes Risk Says Study

An apple a day truly keeps the doctor away. And true to its promise, a recent study shows that eating fresh fruits daily may help lower your risk for diabetes. A study of half a million people in China found those who ate fruit daily were 12% less likely to get type 2 diabetes than those who never or rarely ate it.

The team found that people who did not have diabetes at the beginning of the study and consumed fresh fruit in high amounts had a significantly lower risk of diabetes. Additionally, those who had diabetes at the beginning of the study and consumed high amounts of fruit had a significantly lower risk of dying from any cause, as well as a lower risk of developing cardiovascular complications.

NHS UK reports:

It was also found that people with diabetes at the start of the study who ate fruit regularly were slightly less likely to die or to get complications of diabetes, such as eye problems (diabetic retinopathy), during the study than those who ate fruit rarely or never.

The study was carried out by researchers from the University of Oxford, and Peking University, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, China National Center for Food Safety Risk Assessment, Non-communicable Disease Prevention and Control Department, and Pengzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention, all in China. It was funded by the Kadoorie Charitable Foundation.

Beer Yoga: The Latest Exercise Craze from Germany

No wonder Oktoberfest and Bieryoga come from Germany, their love for beer is so uncanny that they create amazing things from it. Emily and Jhula are the masterminds behind ‘beer yoga’, a German craze that allows fitness fanatics to carry out traditional yoga poses while taking sips of booze.

Participants in these sessions, which usually last an hour, can take sips of the alcohol in between but are advised to limit their drinking to just one or two bottles.

Dailymail reports:

The movement, called ‘Bieryoga’, started in Berlin in 2015 and has spread to cities like Melbourne and Sydney. Despite gushing that they are ‘passionate about beer’, Emily and Jhula insisted the craze was not all fun and games. 

‘Beer Yoga is fun but it’s no joke – we take the philosophies of yoga and pair it with the pleasure of beer-drinking to reach your highest level of consciousness,’ the Bieryoga official site reads, says Dailymail.
